James Glodery Cheney passed
away at his home in Paonia on
March 30, 2011. James was an
avid outdoorsman who never
turned away someone in need.
He is survived by his wife of 63
years, Vivian Riffer Cheney; two
nephews, David (Phoenix, AZ)
and Dan (Tacoma, WA) Evans,
and one niece, Janice Cheney
Schow (Longmont); brother-in-law, Lloyd Riffer; sisters-in-law,
Sheral Riffer and Marilyn Riffer McKenzie, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, brother and a
brother-in-law.
James was the middle of three children (Lois, John) born to Alfred
and Gertrude Cheney on January 27, 1923 in Chicago, Il. He graduated
from Larned, KS High School in 1941, then served in the U.S.
Army 82nd Engineers until 1945. He married Vivian on July 27,
1947 and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1950. After
eight years as a home builder in Perry, KS, he spent 17 years as
District Executive with the Professional Boy Scouts of America in
Missouri. James came to Paonia through his love of the outdoors
beginning in 1955 and was able to move here in 1975 when he became
the town manager, serving until his retirement in 1986.
James had dual membership in Blue Lodge #415 of Perry, KS and
#121 of Paonia. He was also a member of the Moolah Shrine in St.
Louis, MO and the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry
in Grand Junction. He was active in many community organizations
including the Lions Club, Crime Stoppers, Club 20, and Senior
Citizens. He was president of the Cemetery Board and had been
a trustee of the Methodist Church of Paonia.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 2,
2011 at the Paonia United Methodist Church with Pastor Russell
Fletcher presiding. James will be cremated and inurnment will occur
at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice & Palliative Care
of Western Colorado, Boy Scouts of America, Mountain States
Children's Home, P.O. Box 1097, Longmont, Colorado, the Shriners
Hospital for Children, or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral
