"At the time the mail route was still run by way of the McCoy ferry, Whipple purchased two Concord stages from a mail contractor in Oklahoma. The double-decker coaches were slung on heavy leather straps instead of strings. They could carry fifteen to twenty passengers as the above picture shows. The stage route came into being from Wolcott in 1887 and continued to operate for the next twenty years or more." -- The Gates Genealogy

The concrete bridge at Wolcott, showing railroad tracks and equipment behind it. The bridge was built in 1916 during the period when the Colorado Highway Department was replacing many small wooden bridges with concrete structures. This one was on State Highway 131 and employed a Luten arch design, patented by Daniel B. Luten in 1905. Eagle County contracted with the Pueblo Bridge Company to build the bridge. A mud wagon prepared to start the run from Wolcott to Steamboat Springs. A more robust vehicle than a coach for use in difficult conditions such as mud, although conditions in this photo are good. Stacking hay using a horse team and a Mormon derrick on the J over J Ranch (now the 4 Eagle Ranch) north of Wolcott, Colorado. The Ranch was originally homesteaded by John Welsh and later run by his son-in-law, Charles Hartman. Tractors were never used on the ranch before it left the family in 1930.
56) Fannie Powers

Fannie Jane Powers, age 87, taken on June 4, 1944. Fannie died on March 27, 1945, in Eagle.
She was born Fannie Jane Brock in Excello, Mo., on Nov. 29, 1856, residing for 65 years of her life in Eagle county, most of that time near Wolcott. She was married to John Ridgeway with whom she had seven children, all of whom preceded her in death. John died and, in 1923, she married Charles Powers. who died in 1930. She is buried in Sunset View Cemetery....
