"These hunters were camped on Black Creek, ten miles north-east of McCoy in 1912. They are: Rudolph Ebert, Carl Schrupp, Ernest Werner and Fritz Arendt. The photo by Martin Schomers. At that date, it's doubtful if any one of the group possessed a hunting license. "The Conger Mesa School of 1917 was a new frame building located about a half mile north east of the Conger cabin. Some of the earlier settlers of McCoy had never expected this to come about, after their predictions that the Conger Mesa Ditch would go broke and leave. "When Renee and Charlotte Wolf bought the Ebert Ranch on Conger Mesa in 1973, this is how the house looked to them. It was built by Rudolph Ebert about 1912 or right after the homestead cabin was burned to the ground. "The upper part of the Conger Mesa, looking south-east and across Rock Creek Canyon, From Volcano Ridge. Taken in 1919, it shows the Ebert, Ambos, Johannbroer, Theisen, Abbett and a portion of the Schomers place on the extreme right. Before settlement, a well defined Ute Indian trail crossed over the Mesa from Egeria Park to the Blue River, by way of Yarmony Park. Marker for: "Phillip S. Ebert, died Feb. 12, 1907, aged 25 years, At rest," Greenwood Cemetery. The Woodmen of the World symbol is engraved in the middle of the marker. At the bottom of the marker is inscribed: "Here rests a Woodman of the World." Ivy is sculpted at the top of the marker.

"The first school on the Conger Mesa was held in a small cabin on the Schrupp ranch in 1911. The second one was held in this log house built by John Conger in 1892 and abandoned by him a few years later. The building was none too warm and the school furnishings crude but after seven years without a school, no one complained. The building served as a school until a frame building was built in a more central location in 1916.
