Procopio E. Velasquez died Sept. 12 at St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver. Mr. Velasquez was 86 years old. He was born in El Valle, New Mexico on July 24, 1919. His parents were the late Manuel and Casilda (Tafoya) Velasquez.
After serving in the United States Air Force and receiving an honorable discharge, Procopio returned to New Mexico where on Nov. 26, 1949, he married the former Elaudia Romero. Together they moved to Colorado, where he worked for many years as a miner for New Jersey Zinc at the Gilman Mine.
Procopio's greatest enjoyment was spending time fishing with his wife.
He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Solome, Juan and Fadiciano Velasquez.
Mr. Velasquez is survived by his wife, Elaudia, in Red Cliff, his niece, Cathy (Scott) Griego, in Leadville, brothers, Canuto (Sara Velasquez, in Red Cliff and Vergilio (Felicita) Velasquez, in Ojo Sarco, New Mexico, and two sisters, Pricilla (Orlando) Montoya in El Valle, New Mexico and Ascenionita Romero, in Lanio Largo, New Mexico.
The Roasary will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 15, both at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville. Father Jay Jung will officiate and Jean Elliott will play the organ.
Mr. Velasquez will be laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery in Leadville with military honors by the Leadville V.F.W. Post No. 859. Pallbearers will be Henry, Moises and Jerry Medina, Gilbert and Charlie Velasquez and Scott Griego. Honorary pallbearer will be Roger Velasquez.
Following the services there will be a reception at the Eagles Lodge in Leadville.
Arrangements are being handled by Bailey Funeral Home in Leadville.
