Maryann Donna Atencio died Thursday at Sunny Rest Nursing Home in Glenwood Springs. She was 77.
Atencio was born in Del Norte on Nov. 30, 1925. Her parents were the late Joe and Victoria (Fernandez) Baca.
On July 8, 1946, she married Prese Atencio in Del Norte, and together they moved to Minturn, where he found work in the Gilman mine. Later they moved to Leadville.
Friends and family said Atencio loved flowers and crocheting. She crocheted clothes for dolls, afghans, doilies and many potholders.
In her younger years, Atencio worked at both the Roost and Kiandra resort hotels in Vail.
Atencio is preceded in death by: her parents; 11 siblings; and her grandson, Randy Garcia. She is survived by her husband, who lives in Colorado Springs; her daughters Geraldine "Geri" (Ronnie) Martinez, of Colorado Springs and Bettye (Ernie) Romero in Albuquerque, N.M.; a son, Eddie (Raynette) Atencio of Colorado Springs; sisters Stella Duran of Minturn and Virginia (Richard) Nickerson of Montrose; grandchildren Michael (Vicky) Romero, Lawrence (Anna) Romero and Bernadette (Elvis) Caldwell, all in New Mexico, Vicki (Tim) Negrete of Leadville, Mark (Kim) Garcia of Colorado Springs, Cheryl (Michael) Martin, who lives in Germany, and Rhiannon (Brian) Metzger, Rachel Atencio and Sterling Atencio, all of Colorado Springs; and 13 great-grandchildren.
An evening service was held Monday; a Mass of Christian Burial will be held today at 11 a.m. Tuesday, both at Annunciation Catholic Church. Internment is at St. Joseph Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Lawrence Romero, Elvis Caldwell, Mark Garcia, Tim Negrete and Brian Metzger.
